Amateur astronomer Anthony Wesley of Australia was the first to notice the new spot on Jupiter on July 20, 2009, and soon the big telescopes around the world would be swiveling into position to view and photograph the phenomenon.
Astronomers say that the dark scar is the result of an asteroid or comet strike penetrating the surface of Jupiter, the only gas giant planet in our solar system.
