NASA’s Constellation Program took a giant step forward today with the successful launch of the Ares I-X rocket. This was the first flight test of the new vehicle that is designed to carry humans to the Moon and on to Mars.
The rocket launched from Pad 39B and rose to nearly 22 nautical miles in altitude under powered flight. After engine cutoff, the capsule containing test instrumentation and telemetry gear separated from the booster rocket. Both elements splashed down about six minutes after launch, the booster splashing into the Atlantic Ocean about 150 miles downrange of the launch site.
U2 band members Bono and The Edge visited with the International Space Station crew today, hooking up via video from the ISS Mission Control Center in Houston.
